How Long Will Half a Cow Last One Person in Northern Illinois?

For a single person eating beef 3–4 times a week, a half cow will typically
last 2–2.5 years. If you eat beef less often — a couple of times a week — you
could stretch it to 3 years or more. If beef is your primary protein most
nights, you’ll work through it in about a year.

Here’s the straightforward breakdown so you can plan before you order.

How Long It Lasts: Duration by Eating Frequency

How often you eat beefEstimated duration (1 person)
1 – 2 meals per week3 – 4+ years
3 – 4 meals per week2 – 2.5 years
5 – 7 meals per week1 – 1.5 years
Daily with larger portionsUnder 1 year

These estimates assume a ~225 lb take-home yield: the midpoint of the 200–250
lbs you typically receive after processing.

What You’ll Actually Receive in a Half Cow

When you order a half cow from Nadig Farms, your packaged take-home weight is
typically 200–250 lbs. That’s not just ground beef — you’ll receive a full
cross-section of the animal, including premium steaks, roasts, brisket, short
ribs, and ground beef, all vacuum-sealed, labeled by cut, and ready for the
freezer.

For a complete cut-by-cut breakdown with approximate weights for each type, see
our dedicated guide.

How the Math Works

Here’s the simple calculation:

  • Take-home yield: ~225 lbs (midpoint of the typical 200–250 lb range)
  • Average portion per meal: ~0.5 lb (8 oz raw weight)
  • Total meals: 225 ÷ 0.5 = 450 meals

At 3 – 4 beef meals per week, 450 meals works out to roughly 112 – 150 weeks, or about 2 to 3 years for one person.

If you eat smaller portions or rotate beef with chicken, pork, or fish, you’ll land on the high end. If beef is your main protein most evenings, expect the lower end.

Freezer Space: What You’ll Actually Need

A half cow takes up roughly 14 – 16 cubic feet of freezer space. For a single buyer, that typically means dedicating a chest freezer to it. A standard 20 cu ft chest freezer holds a half cow comfortably with room to organize by cut type.

Don’t underestimate this part of the planning: running out of freezer space after delivery is a headache you want to avoid. Read our full guidance on what size freezer you need and how to organize your beef once it arrives.

Making It Work as a Single Buyer

A half cow is sized for families, but it works well for single buyers with a bit of planning. Here’s how to make the most of it.

Batch cook and freeze. Ground beef, stew meat, and short ribs all lend themselves to big batches. Spend a few hours one weekend making soups, chili, and pasta sauce, then freeze in individual portions. You’ll eat well for weeks without cooking every night.

Same premium cuts for when you have time. Ribeyes and NY strips deserve your full attention. Keep them labeled separately and pull them out on weekends or evenings when you actually have time to cook and enjoy them.

Request smaller package sizes on your cut sheet. This is one of the biggest advantages of custom processing. Instead of defrosting a 2 lb package of ground beef when you only need one serving, ask for 0.5 – 1 lb packages. It costs nothing extra and makes a real difference in day-to-day convenience.

Share a few cuts if the variety gets repetitive. Some single buyers gift cuts to family or trade with neighbors who also do bulk buying. It keeps things interesting and ensures nothing goes to waste.

Your beef will stay fresh for up to 2 years. Nadig Farms beef is vacuum-sealed and flash-frozen at the processor. As long as your freezer holds at 0°F or below, you’re not racing a clock.

What If a Half Cow Is More Than You Need?

If 200 – 250 lbs feels like too much commitment for where you are right now, a quarter cow from Nadig Farms gives you roughly 100 – 125 lbs: the same variety of cuts at half the quantity. It’s a good entry point if you want to experience bulk buying before going all in on a half.

Or if you’re not ready for bulk beef at all, our beef bundles let you try a curated selection of cuts in smaller quantities.

Why Single Buyers Choose Nadig Farms

A lot of people assume bulk beef is just for big families. In practice, a meaningful share of our customers are individuals: people who’d rather stock up once than buy mediocre grocery store meat every week.

Here’s what makes Nadig Farms work well for single buyers specifically.

  1. Custom cut sheet. You tell us how you want your beef portioned: steak thickness, ground beef package sizes, whether you want extras like liver or the heart (if available). For a single buyer, getting the package sizes right upfront matters more than it does for a family of six.
  2. USDA-inspected and vacuum-sealed. Every cut comes labeled, inspected, and traceable to our farm in Jo Daviess County, Illinois. No mystery packages.
  3. Delivery across Chicagoland. We deliver to Naperville, Elgin, Joliet, Rockford, and everywhere in between. We also offer scheduled farm / processor pickup if you prefer to haul it yourself.

Common Questions from First-Time Northern Illinois Buyers

Will I get to choose my cuts?

Yes. Most farms offer a “cut sheet” so you can select steak thickness, ground beef package sizes, and whether you want extras like soup bones or organ meat.

Is the beef already processed and frozen?

From reputable farms, yes. It’s cut, vacuum-sealed, labeled, and frozen before pickup or delivery.

What if I don’t eat much beef?

Start with a quarter cow — half the amount of meat, easier on freezer space and budget. Or try beef bundles — you can choose a sample of different cuts to try.

The Bottom Line for Northern Illinois Shoppers

If you’re a single person in Northern Illinois considering half a cow, here’s the realistic breakdown:

  • Light beef eater: 2.5–3.5 years.
  • Moderate beef eater: 1.5–2.5 years.
  • Frequent beef eater: 1–1.5 years.

Buying from a local farm here means you’ll get fresh, pasture-raised beef, reduce your trips to the grocery store, and support Illinois’ rich farming heritage. With the right storage and meal planning, your half cow will feed you well for many months — possibly years.
