Description

How Much Does Half a Cow Cost?

Most families who buy half a cow from us take home around 250 lbs of finished, packaged beef.

Because every animal is different, the final price depends on the size of the animal and processing details, but buying in bulk typically results in a lower average cost per pound compared to retail beef.

What to expect:

  • Your $200 deposit reserves your beef
  • The deposit is applied to your final total
  • Final pricing is confirmed after processing, once the exact take-home weight is known
  • Processing fees are paid directly to the butcher

We’ll always confirm your final balance before delivery or pickup. No surprises.

    Here’s How It Works

    1

    Place Your Deposit

Reserve your half cow with a $200 deposit and secure your spot in our processing schedule.

    2

    We Schedule Processing

Your beef is harvested at AJ’s Lena Maid Meats (USDA inspected) or Johnson’s Processing (state inspected), then dry-aged 2 to 3 weeks before it’s cut. We handle the logistics.

    3

    Customize Your Cuts

Choose steak thickness, roast sizes, and packaging preferences directly with the butcher.

    4

    Final Weight Confirmed

Your beef is weighed, packaged, and frozen. Final pricing is based on the finished weight.

    5

    Delivery or Pickup

We bring your beef to your door and help load it into your freezer, or you pick it up at the farm.

Half Cow Delivery Across Chicagoland and the Collar Counties

Skip the drive. We bring it to you.

The farm is 2 to 2.5 hours from most of Chicagoland. Picking up yourself means a 4 to 5 hour round trip and enough coolers to hold about 250 lbs of frozen beef.

For a flat $250, our family drives it to your door and helps load it into your freezer. No coolers, no lost Saturday. Rather make a day of it? Farm pickup is always free.

How Much Freezer Space Does Half a Cow Need?

About 7 cubic feet if you pack it tight. Packaged beef runs about 35 to 40 lbs per cubic foot, and a half is around 250 lbs. We suggest 8 to 10 cubic feet so you can see what you have and grab cuts without digging. A 9 cubic foot chest freezer fits a half comfortably. Splitting with another family? Each of you needs about half that. See our half cow freezer space guide for chest vs. upright and sizing tips.

    Your $200 Deposit

Each half is raised and processed for a family who reserved it. Your $200 deposit holds your half on a processing date and lets us schedule the butcher without overbooking.

    What It Does

    • Reserves your half on a processing date
    • Locks in your price per pound
    • Counts toward your final total

    What It Doesn’t

    • Set your final total (that comes after weigh-in)
    • Lock your cuts before processing
    • Leave you guessing. We confirm everything before delivery

Is it refundable? Deposits are non-refundable once your animal is scheduled for processing, because that’s when our costs start. Questions before you reserve? Contact us first or call (815) 541-8527.

Optional: Set a Weight Limit on Your Half

Most halves land between 230 and 270 lb of packaged beef. Some come in heavier, and that beef is just as good. If you’d rather know your maximum up front, set a limit.

    • Tell us your limit when you reserve (add it in the order notes at checkout) or any time before your processing date. Example: 260 lb.
    • If your half comes in heavier, we keep the extra packages, usually ground beef. You only pay for beef up to your limit.
    • Example: with a 260 lb limit at $12.00/lb, your beef charge can’t go over $3,120.

The limit covers our beef charge. The butcher’s processing fee is billed separately. Most customers don’t set one, but it’s there if you want it.

Take-Home vs. Hanging Weight: Same Half, Two Ways to Quote It

Bulk beef can be priced two ways. Hanging weight is the carcass before it’s trimmed, deboned, and packaged. Take-home weight is the packaged beef that goes in your freezer. We price by take-home weight because it’s the beef you actually receive. Our halves average a 55% take-home yield, so the same half can be described either way, and the total comes out the same.

Half Cow vs. Grocery Store Beef

When families compare similar quality cuts, buying half a cow usually costs less than buying the same cuts one at a time at the grocery store. It also means fewer store trips: a half lasts most families 6 to 12 months, depending on household size and how often you eat beef.
